The exceptional student program at Palmetto Elementary School serves approximately 200+/- students in grade pre-kindergarten through grade five in the following ways:

Opportunities

Students at Palmetto Elementary are served according to their educational plans.

In addition, there are numerous opportunities for exceptional students to interface with the general education population. These opportunities include:

The Varying Exceptionalities teachers at Palmetto Elementary School assist children who have special learning needs. The purpose of the program is to help each child progress in school and prepare for life after school.

Children in the primary classes receive services in a small group setting. Services for intermediate students are coordinated within the classroom setting based on individual student needs.

Phoenix

The Phoenix program at Palmetto Elementary presently services gifted students in grades one through five. This full-time model is designed to meet student needs in self-contained classrooms using gifted strategies throughout the day and across all subjects. Gifted certified teachers provide students with greater depth and breadth of instruction and learning, with an emphasis on higher level thinking goals.

Each student in the gifted program has an Educational Plan (EP) which is developed at a team meeting that includes parents, teachers and administration staff. Individual and group goals are developed that are revised regularly and updated as needed.

Pre-K ESE

The Pre-K Reverse Mainstream classes at Palmetto are self-contained classes for children with varying disabilities who can benefit from being with non-disabled peers but need a small class setting. The ESE children in the program have varying exceptionalities and evaluations have determined that they will benefit from a small group setting. In this program certified ESE teachers and paraprofessionals teach children with disabilities and a smaller number of children without disabilities who have been screened as role models. Although the children in this program are functioning at various levels of development, each child’s needs are met in the daily program.

Bertha Abess Children's Center

The Bertha Abess Children’s Center serves students whose emotional and/or behavioral problems interfere with social and academic learning, and also with successful functioning in the home, school, and community. The center is designed to meet the individualized needs of each student.

Classroom settings are highly structured, and two specially trained instructional staff members work with each group. Techniques utilized include sequential behavioral interventions, positive behavior management, environmental manipulation, and numerous individualized teaching modalities. Clinical staff members provide students with individual and group therapy, including art therapy.
