Technology is an integral part of the educational experience at Palmetto Elementary School. The staff and students utilize technology on a daily basis to accomplish a myriad of tasks. Numerous hardware and software applications, some designed specifically for education, enable our students and staff to optimize the learning process. Palmetto Elementary is proud to be a leader in educational technology.

In 2007, Miami-Dade County Public Schools implemented the Electronic Grade Book at all schools. This web-based application makes it possible for teachers, parents and students to track grades, attendance and assignments. During the 2008-2009 school year, parents will be able to access real time data of their child's academic progress at any time. Students and parents will see the grades on assignments and assessments as soon as they are recorded. It will not be necessary to wait for progress reports or report cards to indicate student achievement. The Electronic Grade Books facilitates communication between the school and home for the benefit of our students.

Palmetto Elementary also utilizes Accelerated Reader (AR), a computer based reading management and motivational system designed to complement existing literacy programs. The goal of AR is to motivate students to read using an individualized goal/ point system. Students' individual goals are based on their reading grade equivalent score determined by the STAR reading test, coupled with the amount of time the student should devote to daily reading. Students choose books to read and then take computerized tests that assess comprehension. AR technology presents test scores, points earned and keeps records in order to help teachers and parents manage and track a student's attempt to reach his or her goal.

Recently Palmetto upgraded to the Enterprise online version of the Accelerated Reader program that provides access to over 107,000 AR tests. This assures a comprehension quiz is available for almost every book a student chooses to read. A new feature of Accelerated Reader called Home Connect, allows parents to monitor students' Accelerated Reader progress online from home. The program also permits parents to establish email reminders of their child's quiz results. Palmetto Elementary is committed to the utilization of technology to enhance the educational experience of our students.
